PRESS FOR PROGRESS-
As said by one world-renowned feminist, journalist, social and political activist Gloria Steinem, “The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights," Thus International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action.
March 8 2017, women were being bold for change. It is now another year, another March 8 and this year women are pressing for progress. Before pressing you had to gather courage and be bold. And this requires strength, self-determination, knowing of one’s self worth, believing in yourself. This is another day meant to remind the world of the importance of women in our society, a day basically meant to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
Any work done by man can be done by a woman, it is just a matter of believing in yourself as a woman. Take for example a country like Botswana for so many years soldiers were only men, look at it today, women are given more opportunities like men, they go through the same training and occupy same posts. The days where women were only confined to the home and its chores have long been over, be it technical, political, invention or just anything, women also do have the potential to do it. The World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report findings also proved that gender parity is over 200 years away. Such a long time, NAC therefore believes that women have now had a very long time to gather their strength, it is now time to press for progress, take it upon your life to make sure you stand up where you are as a woman and make a difference, and as you do pull other women to the party. You can do it.
Many women have fought for the day where women will be given higher positions in political platforms, in high offices and it has all been a success. And with global activism for women's equality fuelled by movements like #MeToo , #TimesUp and more - there is a strong global momentum striving for gender parity. Join in and make a difference, because when one door closes another is open. Whatever women tried in the past and failed, you can pick that up and run with it, you never know maybe one step was not clear in the past for the idea to be a success, when one approach fails, go another but don’t just give up and sorb. This is no time for tears, have a solid heart. The way you fight for your children, take change as your child, nature it until it becomes real. You might not live to see the day it all comes to pass but when you rest you will surely know that your girl child will enjoy the change you pressed so hard for.
Just like they say Rome was not built in a day, also this gender parity won’t happen overnight. But imagine this, back at school when you had an elder sibling or cousin in the school, you always felt safe from being bullied. The same has to apply to women even now, there is a very strong global movement for advocacy, activism and support for women. You have support across the world, then why be afraid to take a bold step and press for what you believe is right. Other women have made progress but they are waiting on you to come on board and go sail that ship together. It is time to leave your comfort zones and be strong and motivated than ever to press forward and progress under gender parity. A strong call to #PressforProgress . A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.
